Chapter Three

Memories

I was lying down in the same bed but when I woke up it was a white room and this room was completely silent. I looked around frantically but I was restricted by four rough leather strips that stretched across my body. It was just like my dream, I watched as two doctors approached me, they look dead but scared. One was carrying a syringe and the other doctor a blood pack. I struggled trying to release myself from the rough grasp of the straps. I persisted and eventually the straps snapped and I was free. I got up off the bed and realised I was mimicking the dream perfectly. I walked away from the terrified and visibly shaken doctors, with every step my posture became more and more decrepit.

My mouth and nose began to merge and protrude from my face. My arms and legs were contorted and made it hard to walk, finally my chest grew larger. My heart battered against my ribs and my ribs cut the inside of my sternum as they pierced my chest. My body was covered with hair and hurting. I recalled in the dream a man in black saying the now engraved phrase but nothing, just silence. I looked around the room and saw a small silver handle sticking out of a wall. I glanced back at the doctors and left the room. I walked out into a large room that was littered with monitors and cameras.

I looked at the cameras and counted how many there were. There were eight but only five monitored the hospital. I looked at the other three and that's when it hit me, three cameras were monitoring the room I was in. I scrolled through the footage and I reached the start. I watched as the camera monitored me at the start of the day. I looked in horror as I saw a man walk up to the curtain and just stood there. I looked at the man and realised it was one of the men in the black suits. I scrolled through footage and I watched him walking off as I called for a doctor and following me out the building when I exited the hospital.

The screen then abruptly cut out and a only darkness consumed the screen. I stared at the screen allowing my mind to process what I had just seen. I shook myself from the deep thought I was in and headed out the building. I walked down hallways and multiple flights of steps. I was always greeted with horrified eyes wherever I went. Eventually people called the police and authorities. I was nearly out of the building and I was greeted with a crowd of officers outside. I exited the building and I heard painful comments about me.

As soon as I exited the building a officer behind a barricade yelled ‘Freeze. Get on the ground, hands behind your head!’ I did as the officer commanded. As I waited for the officers to walk up to me or shoot me I thought of how I would get out of this situation. My body slowly started to become more human as minutes went by. My arms and legs retreated to their normal length, my chest smoothed out along with my deformed spine. My face and body became more recognisable by others. I waited for something to happen but to my surprise nothing happened. I looked at the officers with my hands on my neck and I was met with horrified faces and looks of fear pinned onto the faces of others.

‘Stay down and nothing will happen!’ An officer screamed into a bullhorn. I looked at my body and there was no change. Hair covered my body and cuts under that, my clothes destroyed and my mind the same. ‘Go. Secure him!’ Another officer screamed as four men ran to me. They grabbed me and pulled me off the ground. I was dragged to the other officers and they weren't taking any chances. I was dropped in front of a tall figure dressed in a blue suit with “Lieutenant” on the shirt. As I got up a circle of riot guards surrounded me and they planted their shields into the ground. ‘You know how to make an entrance. I'll give you that’ the lieutenant said as she looked around me, the guards must have thought I was planning to escape because they pulled out their heavy rifles and pointed them at me.

‘I'm not doing to escape, don't worry’ ‘You'll probably shoot each other instead of me’ I said in a mocking tone. ‘Let me warn you, my soldiers are the best of the best’ ‘We have the best marksman and riot guards this side of the globe’ The lieutenant said as she looked at the soldiers and their stance. ‘Formation, Blade!’ The woman yelled as her troops began to create a blade like structure. I examined the troops and I was impressed by the way they stood there motionless, awaiting orders. Suddenly I saw in the corner of my eye the lieutenant try to punch me. I ducked and grabbed her arm and in her hand was a combat knife. ‘Are you trying to hit me?’ I asked in a playful and curious tone.

She nodded and suddenly her eyes became engulfed with a venomous fury. She pulled her hand out of my grasp and stared at me. She tightened her grip and took another stab at me. This time she slightly caught me off guard and she slashed my arm open. I grabbed the knife and took it out of her hand and said in a slow tone ‘I know you don't trust me, please I'm not what you think I am’ She looked at me and once again nodded her head as she walked away from me. I threw the knife away and grabbed my arm and with the little knowledge I had of stopping blood, applied pressure on the wound and stumbled after the lieutenant.

My hand was covered with blood that already soaked through my shirt. I looked around and I was greeted with soldiers ready to put a large hole in my chest. I felt threatened but the feeling of fear stopped me from doing anything other than walk away from the threat. I walked alongside the lieutenant and I was still tense from her trying to stab me. I clutched my chest in pain as I noticed the soldiers were forming a line behind me. ‘Where are you taking me?’ I asked as I waited for a reply patiently ‘I along with my troops will take you to a confidential location. We know about you and you know about us’. I looked at her confused but I followed her out of curiosity.

After a long awkward walk with us being followed by a trail of soldiers the lieutenant eventually stopped at a large building that towered over any other buildings in a ten meter radius. ‘If you'll follow me’ the lieutenant said as she motioned for me to step inside the building. I walked inside and I was struck with a sudden sense fear. I looked around and saw a sea of people in the black suits. They all just wondered around like lost dogs trying to find their way in the infinite field called life. I was terrified because every encounter with these people was a hostile attack. The lieutenant suddenly grabbed my shoulder and said in a happy voice ‘Don't worry, they follow orders. Follow me please’ I did as I was told but it wasn't like I had any choice. If I ran I was going to be shot from the troops.

I followed the lieutenant down what felt like a maze, I quickly grabbed the five cent coin and clutched it as I was being led down halls, while having a muzzle driven into my back. I was scared of dying but I was also scared of the uncontrollable power that I hold. I was led into a large room with padding ‘What do you want with me?’ I asked as I looked at the lieutenant. She looked away for a second so I stuffed the five cent coin into the side of my mouth. ‘We only want to ensure your safety. Please step in the room’ She said ‘Quickly search him’. She continued and before I knew it two soldiers were patting me down. ‘Nothing’ one of the soldiers said. I was pushed into the room and the door slammed shut behind me. I spun around and I was distracted by the amount of locks and bolts that were being dragged into place to secure the door.
