On Saturday 21st of April 4th year English students were lucky enough to see Matilda the Musical (directed by Matthew Warchus and produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company) in the Cambridge Theatre, London.
The play was about Matilda, an extremely intelligent five year old whose parents do not want or care for her. She starts school and her teacher, Ms Honey, realises how talented she is. Matilda puts things right within the school and stands up to the terrifying principal, Ms Trunchbull. The play is performed in such a way that it is enjoyed by all ages, with humour to suit both adults and children. Having read the book as a child, I think the production was an amazing representation and really brings Roald Dahl’s characters to life.
The acting was enthusiastic and really made the play what it was. Matilda was extremely well played by such a talented young girl. I think Mrs Wormwood was represented very well too; I loved her accent and the dancing scene was incredible. And as for Ms Trunchbell, she was equal parts terrifying and hilarious. I think all actors deserve a huge congratulations on making the show what it is.
The setting of the play was extremely impressive. I loved how smooth the transitions from scene to scene were. My favourite scene setting was probably the library as it was warm coloured and represented a welcoming place for Matilda. The lighting really set the mood in every scene. Grey, dark tones were used for the school scenes and Ms Trunchbull’s office. In contrast to this, warm bright lighting was used for Ms Honey's classroom and the library.
The costumes suited the characters well: a school uniform for Matilda, a light and flowy dress for Miss Honey (I think this represents her kindness), and dark, dull clothes for Ms Trunchbell. I also loved Mr and Mrs Wormwood’s costumes which represented their personalities. A tacky suit was worn by Mr Wormwood, and fancier clothes and makeup for Mrs Wormwood to represent how graceful she wanted to be.
The songs and dances were catchy and entertaining. There was so much going on in each scene and it was hard to know where to look!
I really enjoyed the play overall and think it was a success. I think it is amazing that it is performed to such a high standard. I would recommend this play to everyone.
