Chapter Two

Discovery

I wandered out onto the street like a lost dog. I merely watched as cars sped past me. Blurred lights created a line of colour as the cars twisted and turned around corners and bends. ‘Jesus, what do I do now?’ I thought to myself as I wandered down the street. I was tired, confused and angry. If my life taught me anything, you don't want me to be those things. I thought to myself as I remembered my brawl. I was young, stupid and ignorant. I walked into a pub called The Three Arrows. I ordered a drink and for entertainment the pub allowed people to enter brawls. If they defeated their opponent they won a prize.

I felt confident that I could win a brawl or two and I was right. I was harassed by a group of people. I wanted to teach them a lesson and I was waiting for an opportunity to blow off some steam. I remember challenging the leader of the group and later beating him to a pulp. I succeeded, him and his boys never had a problem with me again. I remember giving him a look of fear in his eyes and a variety of blood soaked limbs. I walked out of the pub happy and with a smile on my face. My fists coated with a thick layer of blood but all I cared about was winning the fight. Sadly I can't say that now, I trudged across the street with my head down and my fists buried into my pockets. I smiled though, as I recalled the moment I got my revenge on the gang's leader.

The name burned into my memory like a branding iron’s symbol. ‘Black serpents’ I muttered to myself as I walked a bit faster. I looked at the road and there he was, the same man, I thought. Dressed all in black walking opposite me. I waited for the traffic to stop so I could see if it was the same man or another person. The traffic screeched to a halt and I ran to the other side of the street and the man was in front of me. ‘Hey! What do you want?’ I yelled as I grabbed the man’s black trench coat and slammed his body into a wall. ‘What do you want from me?’ I asked as I put pressure on my arm that was pinning him to the wall. I put one hand on his neck and pressed down on it forcing him to gasp for air.

The man coughed as he gripped my hand and said ‘You're in good hands’ I pulled my arm away as I stared at him. ‘Do you know what happened to me?’ I said as I growled at the man, he looked at me with an amazed look as I stared at him. The man opened his mouth but instead of words he started to scream as he looked at me. I looked at him once again before I flexed my hand and ran my fingers through his arms. I walked away from him but he gripped his arm in pain and ran at me. He caught me off guard and we both tumbled to the ground.

We both watched as people didn't stop to help but just walked around us. I got up and looked at the man as he struggled to get up. I grabbed his hand and pulled him up and whispered in his ear ‘If you don't stop following me I will not show any mercy’ I walked down the street against the arms of strangers. I felt like I was in a trap, like I was running down an escalator that was going up. I pushed my way passed people and eventually was at the end of the infinite paradox. I dug my hands into my pockets once again and ran down the street. I saw a store that was greeted by a line of people just standing around. As I looked at that scene a quote sprung into my head.

“Life is but a mighty urge to fill our time with distractions until our death”. I walked towards the store and at this point all that was on my mind was getting a grasp of what happened to me and why did I wake up in a hospital. As I stumbled closer to the store I could make out people's faces and expressions. I walked to the back of the queue and after a second or two images and visions flashed in front of my eyes. A hazy image of a dimly lit room and a door swam before my eyes. The image faded away like smoke but suddenly another vision was in front of me. It was the same image but the door was open and a face was looking at me, I felt uneasy and in a desperate attempt to get rid of the visions I blinked my eyes.

It was still there, every time I blinked the face was closer to me. I could make out a face, it had brown eyes, a large scar running down the left side of it’s face and it had a mouth but it was closed. As I blinked I got a closer look and I realised the mouth wasn't closed it was stuck together, there was no mouth it was merely stretched skin. I awake from the trance and I was shaking. ‘What did my mind just show me?’ I muttered to myself. I noticed the queue was gone so I walked into the store and down one of the aisle. I scratched my arm as I wandered down the aisle. I continued down different aisles and noticed a woman just standing there. ‘Miss, are you okay?’ I asked as I walked up to her.

I tapped on her shoulder and I was greeted by a face so beautiful that I questioned if this was real. ‘I'm fine thanks’ the woman responded and her voice sounded like an angel singing. It was peaceful and I wish I could capture this moment. I examined her face and looked at her emerald green eyes. Her voice was heavenly. I looked at the woman and then I slowly walked away back down the aisles, the woman ran up to me and held out her hand. I looked in her hand and noticed a small package ‘For you’ the woman said as she looked at me with a smile. I took the package and walked away once again, I marched out of the store and walked around the side to open the package.

It was neatly wrapped in a dark purple and gold paper and it had a purple bow on top. I tore the bow off and the paper that was so carefully wrapped apart, I opened the small box and there saw a note inside. I picked up the small slip of paper and was shocked to find the haunting tag line. “Don't worry, you're in good hands” I looked at the note and stashed it in my pocket. I ran back into the store and I saw the woman. I ran up to her and I wanted answers ‘What the hell, why did you give me this?’ I asked as we both stared at each other. ‘I saw you that day, in the bar, you can really handle yourself’ ‘So much rage, anger, sorrow. We need you’ the woman said as I looked at her with a mixture of emotions.

‘What!’ ‘Who it this We?’ I asked in a confused tone. ‘The brawl against The Black Serpents, they were our way of seeing what we were dealing with’. As I was distracted with this information the woman walked out of the store. Thoughts rushed through my mind and I recalled one memory. I just saw the brawl and as a victory I glanced around the room and I remember seeing a woman dressed in black at the back of the pub. When I looked in her direction she got up and walked out of the pub, this was a good four years ago but your mind can recall the smallest of information at times. I rushed out of the store but the woman had already left.

I ran down streets and eventually a variety of dead ends. I ran down a dark alley where the sun was blocked by multiple high rise buildings. I inspected the area to see if there was any way of hoping over the wall. My train of thought was cut short by the sound of a boot nestling into a stone brick. ‘We knew you would come here!’ A mysterious voice yelled over my shoulder. I turned around and saw a man covered in black clothes. ‘Tell me who you are, or I will snap!’ I yelled back in the man’s direction. Suddenly, another four men dressed in black appeared out of nowhere. I rushed the five men, knocking three of them to the ground, and another two stumbling back.

‘I told you next time we met I wouldn't hold back’ I said as I grabbed one of the men and threw him against a wall. I pinned another man down with my foot and slowly put pressure on him with my foot. The three that remained all pulled out what looked like guns and began to open fire. I quickly learnt that they weren't shooting bullets but darts. I marched towards the three men disposing of two of them and as I did I was slowly becoming tired and weary. I grabbed the last man’s neck and pulled him into the air but before I could do anything I fell to the ground and I could only watch as the last man tied my hands and feet together and put a bag over my head.

It was dark and uncomfortable, I was confused about what had happened to me. I suddenly felt a group of arms curl around my chest and legs. I heard people talking but the chat was abruptly stopped when I was dropped onto what I could only identify as a metal table. Suddenly I couldn't feel my arms and legs and soon enough the rest of my body. I must have fallen asleep because when I woke up I was in the place I started.
